Daylight savings time is over\u00a0\u2014 will you be grabbing an extra cup of coffee this afternoon?<\/p>\n

A recent article in National Geographic<\/a>\u00a0looks at the latest research behind why you love (or don\u2019t love) coffee.<\/p>\n

Spoiler alert: It\u2019s in your genes!<\/p>\n

While regular coffee consumption may build up a tolerance to caffeine over time, some people are just naturally more sensitive than others.\u00a0 A genetic variation may explain why some people struggle with anxiousness and insomnia after an extra espresso, while fast caffeine metabolizers are ready reach for another cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019re finding is that we have built-in genetic factors that help us with self-regulating our caffeine intake,\u201d says\u00a0Marilyn Cornelis<\/a>, a caffeine researcher at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting how strong of an impact our genetics have on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caffeine may also be influencing some people\u2019s sensory pathways in ways we don\u2019t yet fully understand, Reed notes. Even the sensory experience of coffee is controlled by your sense of taste and smell \u2014 another set of factors that are influenced by our genes, NatGeo<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n

The article also reminds us that people who smoke (or use nicotine) metabolize caffeine more quickly, providing a scientific understanding of the negative health association behind \u201ccoffee and a cigarette\u201d for so many years.<\/p>\n

This was one of the key misconceptions that something that stood in the way of public awareness of coffee\u2019s health benefits\u00a0\u2014 until relatively recently.<\/p>\n

Now, overwhelming scientific evidence, supported by the World Health Organization<\/a> and the FDA\u2019s Dietary Guidelines<\/a>, shows that coffee can he a part of a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n
